Nightmare Nurse has possessed Zatanna instead of reuniting with Alice Winter! John first tries threatening to kill Zatanna to save her from this fate, but can't do it, so he opens a portal to the Between, hoping it will drag the demon out of Zatanna. It doesn't work, instead everyone including the House of Mystery is dragged into the Between, and its hungry consciousness is eager to consume them! Asa leaves Zatanna, explaining that the power of the magician intoxicated her, and that by possessing Alice Winter, she saved her - she needed a host, and Alice was dying, so they both benefited. As the JLD considers this the Between invades their minds, more voracious than before. Zatanna plans to unite her mind with that of the House and use that power to pull them free. Asa says John's previous connection would boost the power sufficiently, and further says she will feed the Between life to assuage its hunger and distract it. As she leaves, Zatanna steals a kiss from her! They escape but the Nightmare Nurse cannot, and is apparently consumed. They can't save Asa or Alice, who is dying of illness. But that kiss let Zatanna catch a fragment of the demon's soul, which she now uses to resurrect it. This time, Asa asks permission of Alice to possess her, and promises not to bury Alice.
